Retention wasn't the product. It was the ritual.

Why do supplement subscribers keep paying when they can't tell if it works?
DTC supplements have an evaluation problem: efficacy is hard to feel, so "is this working?" should threaten retention. This study asked what actually keeps subscribers paying — and found the answer isn't the product at all.
The morning ritual didn't answer "is this working?" It deleted the question.
The anchor makes the efficacy question feel already answered.
Among ritual-adopting subscribers, the morning anchor behaviour functionally eliminates the "is this working?" question — not by answering it, but by making it feel beside the point. The ritual becomes the thing being purchased: a small daily certainty that displaces the uncertain efficacy evaluation underneath. Counterintuitively it works most powerfully on the buyers who would otherwise scrutinise hardest, because the ritual gives their scrutiny somewhere else to rest. Prove efficacy harder and you're answering a question the ritual has already retired.
Build retention around the ritual, not the evidence. Make the daily anchor easy to form and hard to skip, and target it especially at high-scrutiny subscribers — the efficacy proof matters less to repeat than the habit does.
These are modelled outcomes, not measured ones. Every score and probability here is a synthetic-population prediction, produced before any real-market test. Two simulation runs on two public brands — directional on the retention mechanism, not a churn forecast. Treat the numbers as directional — the direction and size of the effect is the finding, not a forecast. A design partner validates the top interventions against real behaviour before a decision commits to them.
