Do sophisticated buyers see through a brand halo, or fall for it harder?
In plant-based, branded preference routinely beats blind taste. The comfortable explanation is that the products genuinely taste better to fans. This study tested a harder one: that identity-aligned buyers recruit their own analytical rigour to defend a choice already made emotionally.
Branded preference exceeded blind taste — and analysis made it worse, not better.
Critical faculties got conscripted to defend the decision, not to test it.
The paradox is that analytical sophistication didn't protect buyers from the brand halo — it armed it. Identity-aligned consumers had already chosen at the emotional level, and their critical faculties were then recruited to justify that choice rather than to interrogate it. The sharper the buyer, the more articulate the post-hoc defence, so branded preference exceeded blind taste most among exactly the people you'd expect to resist. Flavour improvements move the blind score; they don't move the buyers whose rationality is already working for the brand.
Don't win this category on blind-taste superiority alone — it under-predicts branded preference among your best buyers. Invest in the identity alignment that recruits their rigour to your side, and read blind-vs-branded gaps as a measure of that alignment, not of product deficiency.
These are modelled outcomes, not measured ones. Every score and probability here is a synthetic-population prediction, produced before any real-market test. Three simulation runs on three public brands — directional on the mechanism, not a forecast of share. Treat the numbers as directional — the direction and size of the effect is the finding, not a forecast. A design partner validates the top interventions against real behaviour before a decision commits to them.
